Portrait Drawing from Life Workshop with Paul Bartlett RBSA

About

A professional portrait model will be in one long pose (with breaks) throughout the day. Students may either devote the whole day to resolving one work, or produce more studies with guidance from an expert tutor.

Age group and abilities to be taught        

  • 18 years and above.
  • Suitable for those with some drawing experience

Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught

  • Produce portrait drawings working from a model.
  • Learn dry drawing media drawing techniques

Course outline for Portrait Drawing from Life Workshop

Morning activity

  • Combined introduction and overview of options for the day via examples of the tutor’s own art work
  • Introduction to measurement, proportion, “general to specific” or “specific to general”, etc.
  • Practicing line and tone on white paper for beginners.
  • Individual guidance for more experienced students

Afternoon activity

  • Continue working from one long pose to practice your drawing, with supervision and guidance from the tutor when required
  • Resolving study from morning work or respond to options introduction by the tutor for using mid-tone paper

Materials and equipment required by participant

  • A folder to take your work home in
  • A selection of drawing materials including graphite pencils, willow charcoal, charcoal pencils, white chalk or similar, plastic and putty erasers

Materials and equipment provided

(These will be provided for use during the workshop and are included in the fee)

  • A2 sheets of cartridge paper
  • Grey paper for pastels
  • A selection of drawing materials

Methods of assessing outcomes

  • Discussion of workshop with Workshop Tutor and fellow workshop students and completion of evaluation form.
