Polar Exploration - Victoria J E Jones

About

7th June — 24th of June 2013 ATTIC, Top Floor, 38 Albany Road, Cardiff, CF24 3RQ Polar Exploration is a simulation of the Arctic experience as Jones envisages it. In her imagination she perceives the Arctic to be a blank space, space where hopes, desires, fears and flights of fancy can be projected and displaced. The intention with Polar Exploration is to create a space where mental shifts can be evoked. Sited at ATTIC in Cardiff, it articulates Jones' interest in Gaston Bachelard's notion that the attic is a space of clarity of mind and rationality. Victoria J E Jones creates immersive experiences that allow the audience to become fully involved in a world of her construction. The experiences are constructed to either feel like an empathic experience or feel mentally transporting. Jones is interested in making work that feels positive and uplifting. Polar Exploration is part of the ‘Rapid Cycling' residency series at ATTIC in Cardiff. The residency has featured work by artists concerned with exploring the mind and has been funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the Medical Research Council's Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University. The attic space is provided by Journeys mental health charity.
