Points of Listening (PoL) is a monthly programme of listening workshops, activities and discussions based in and around London. From January 2014 it takes place every second Wednesday of the month. Events are held at the London College of Communication in addition to various locations, outdoors and indoors, throughout the city.
Twenty episodes – twenty anecdotes, recordings, film clips, excerpts from other peoples’ writings and thoughts – find a shared space somewhere between the overheard, the misheard, the crossed wire and the signal – the signal jammed and the signal transmitted.
A cattle auction, an absent skylark, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, the cruel sea, Jane Austen, “prowords”, telepathy, conversations on commuter trains, in cafes and in pubs, sub-titles, sheep that speak, Call of Duty and blinking: these are what I’m thinking about now and some of this, perhaps most of it, will make it into my presentation on the 12th . There might even be a magic trick.
‘Friday afternoon, I’m walking home from school and I’m watching some men build a new house. And the guy hammering on the roof calls me a paranoid little weirdo. In Morse code’. Emo Phillips.
