‘Points of Juncture’ looks at self and identity, linking both the artist's work, with the ‘material identity’ of Forty Hall – a place built upon a textile legacy.

‘Points of Juncture’ comprises recent works, and specially commissioned pieces that draw inspiration from Forty Hall’s textile history. The title ‘Points of Juncture’ stands for the thread of ideas and the connections of the works that are presented in this exhibition. They look at self and identity, linking both the artist's work, with the ‘material identity’ of Forty Hall – a place built upon a textile legacy, by its former owner, Sir Nicholas Rainton who traded textiles across Europe.

The nature of Cos Ahmet’s work is centred on the body. Some of his works are displayed as embodiments, in the form of casts. Other times, there is an absence of the body, and are implied by bodily organic forms. For Ahmet, his artistic practice represents parts of a body making references to human activity and the human condition that are ever-present in the way he uses metaphors to shape his work, be it object based, two-dimensional or something in between. This use of metaphors are most evident in his recent works taken from the artist’s 2016 body of work, ‘Thread Is A Thought’, presented in this exhibition, and continues in to the new works.

“I am interested in the idea of the body as a container that communicates memory, emotions and gestures, where ‘body’ and ‘material’ react with each other. These reactions stand as metaphors, representing the body and self as: ‘thread' as the thought, ‘warp' as the skeleton, ‘weft' as flesh or skin, and the ‘weave’ as the body or soul.“

‘Building a Legacy’ (2017) makes particular reference to Rainton’s role as a mercer, through a series of casts of hands upon which spools or pirns of yarns rest. These casts symbolise the hands in various ways: the hands that make the cloth (the weaver) and the hands of the creator; they also allude to the ships that imported the fabrics (the mercer), whilst the spools and the threads attached to them, suggest the weaving process, and the ‘boat shuttles’ used on the looms to produce the cloth.

“My starting point for the new works was inspired by and references Forty Hall’s very existence – a place built upon a textile legacy. I wanted to take a very different approach and not be literal, abstracting the information the way I see it. What emerged for me was a certain dialogue, a notion that the fabric, had become the Hall’s symbol, forging itself a ‘material identity’, and presenting its own metaphor, which draws parallels with how I see the processes in my own work and practice, creating a new discourse where these two identities meet.“

'Points of Juncture' is commissioned by Forty Hall Estate with support from Arts Council England.
