About
5 September 2015 | 14:00

Something truly remarkable happened in Plymouth Sound in the summer of 1815: the presence on guard and on board HMS Bellerophon, of a vanquished emperor. From across Britain, thousands came to witness the event: crowding on the little boats and the Breakwater to glimpse this disturber of the world and ‘most extraordinary man of modern times.’
On 5 September 2015 guest speakers and experts from Plymouth University commemorate the 200th anniversary of the ‘sublime spectacle’ and ‘object of boundless curiosity’ in talks about the wider context, local and national impact, image-making, and memories of the days when Napoleon came.
The event runs as follows:

- 14:00-15:00: Professor William Doyle, University of Bristol - Talk: ‘Napoleon and the British: from Toulon Harbour to Plymouth Sound’
