Płóciennik’s paintings are populated by “personae and hetairai’, hybrid giants. They look as in the making, transforming from geological forms and turning into humanoids. Their bodies are deformed, heavy, animalistic, and somehow distorted or unfinished. Intuitive sketches and the artist’s imagery yield a carnal, physical tissue of these characters through formal and textural experimentation. The artist is not only preoccupied with the external appearance of the half-human creatures. Płóciennik is fascinated with Carl Gustav Jung’s psychoanalysis, social masks and the concealed inner “I”.
The title of Szaweł Płóciennik’s exhibition makes a perverse reference to Article 196 of the Polish Criminal Code that covers a crime known as the offence to religious feelings. His latest works include themes of the Passion, figures of Christ and other monumental figures. The artist refers to latest political and social developments and street protests which have captured a number of symbols and figures traditionally reserved for the sphere of religion. He criticises excessive religiosity and recommends braking free from religious bonds and, indeed, the dying anthropocentricity with insight, with all masks removed, straight into the genuine primeval ego.

Szaweł Płóciennik (b. 1987) graduated from the Faculty of Painting the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw; author of graphic novels, painter and performer; founder of the Chapel Open Experiment Study; curator of the Oddział Przepiękny project. He received a Super Hiro award nomination in the cartoon category in 2012, a Grzegorz Kowalik award in the Coming Out: The Best of Academy of Fine Arts Diploma Projects in 2015. He is the author of the cover of the album “Izrael gra kulturę” by Izrael. He received a Creative Award of the Masovia Voivodship in 2018. He took part in the Coming Out: The Best of Academy of Fine Arts Diploma Projects in 2019. He received an Entry Initiative Award in 2019.

The ENTRY Initiative Award was first presented in 2003 and it is a joint award of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Founders: Mrs. Agnieszka Gieryńska and Mr. Paweł Gieryński, and Mr. Dariusz Wasylkowski and Galeria Promocyjna. Its goal is to support young Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts graduates to kick start their artistic careers. Each year, two artists will receive a scholarship and an opportunity to present their works at Galeria Promocyjna.
