Unravel the enigma of Piero della Francesca

About

The celebrated Italian Renaissance painter, Piero della Francesca was a pioneering mathematician, a master of perspective, and a scholar. Today, his status is comparable with that of Leonardo and Michelangelo. But who was Piero, and how did he become the person and artist that he was? Until now, in spite of the great interest in his work, these questions have remained largely unanswered.

James R. Banker is author of a new book, 'Piero della Francesca: Artist and Man', which for the first time integrates the story of Piero’s artistic and mathematical achievements with the full chronicle of his life. In this talk, Banker will bring this fascinating Renaissance enigma to life. We will ‘meet’ Piero’s friends, family, and collaborators, and discover his social background, allowing us to understand him as a man, artist, and scholar, rather than simply as the painter of a series of isolated, great works.

This event also forms the keynote lecture for a two-day conference 'Piero della Francesca and Disegno' organised by the Courtauld Institute of Art. For more information about the conference and to book a place, visit courtauld.ac.uk
