This March, Surface Gallery will welcome Dr Peter Day to Nottingham for the culmination of a 6-month project, a solo-exhibition responding to themes of loss, memory and reflection.

About

Initially started as a means for the exploration and understanding of Peter’s grief after the passing of his father, the project encompasses his personal experience of loss, but will also resonate with the viewer’s own emotions and experiences. ‘I aim to cause viewers to stop, reflect and consider for a short time’ Peter tells us, ‘I am not sure we ever come to terms with loss, but my project places this grief at the centre so that it can be communicated, measured and discussed.’

Employing photography, moving image and sound installation, Peter is interested in how different mediums can explore and understand both ourselves and others. Responding to Surface Gallery’s main gallery space, each piece will work individually while also combining to create a thought-provoking experience for viewers. A catalogue, showcasing work from the project as well as containing texts and critical essays will accompany the exhibition.

Visitors are invited to see the work that has emerged from Peter’s research when Pictures of My Father opens at 18:00 on Friday 20th March. This will be accompanied by a poetry reading at 19:00 by Bill Greenwell, which will draw on the same themes, as well as presenting the quirky material for which Bill is better known. Bill Greenwell has been published as a parodist and poet for almost forty years, and he has won two thousand competitions. He also runs the influential Poetry Clinic. In addition to his political and satirical material, he is known for his offbeat investigations of love and death.

As part of the Pictures of my Father exhibition, in keeping with its themes, visitors are invited to take part in a ‘Death Cafe’, on the 21st of March. This will be a group-directed dialogue exploring death in an accessible and welcoming environment, starting at 11:00 and 14:00. The sessions will begin with an exhibition talk by Dr Peter Day and an introductory talk on death and remembrance by Dr Judith Wester, a Thanatologist and academic who is director and founder of CEDAR; Community Education in Death Awareness and Resources.

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

Pictures of My Father will launch in conjunction with a solo show by Chiara Dellerba in Surface Gallery’s Project Space. As always, there will be a donations bar, with ales provided by local brewery, Springhead.
