Pictures for The Beehive is an exhibition featuring an eclectic mix of contemporary British artists including Antony Gormley, Maggi Hambling, Catherine Goodman, Stuart Semple, The Chapman Brothers, and many more.
About
All artworks have been donated to the exhibition, and will be auctioned off at the end of the show raising funds for The Splash Appeal, the £1million campaign operated by Diverse Abilities to build a hydrotherapy pool for adults with disabilities at The Beehive, Dorset.
One of the artists involved, Amy Shuckburgh, commented: “I was delighted to be asked to donate a picture to this charity and for such a worthwhile cause. The work I'm donating is part of a series exploring my experience of caring for children, and seemed an appropriate piece to offer for the auction. One of my children has learning difficulties and this series on motherhood began as a way of processing and celebrating the particular challenge of caring for a child with special needs. The term special needs has a bitter-sweet ring to it, and in any context, however 'special' the needs, caring can be the hardest job and also the most rewarding.”
Alongside these artworks, sketches of the adults who attend The Beehive will be exhibited. Created by Dorset artist Henrietta Young, it encourages the viewer to think more about representation of people with disabilities in the media – mainstream or otherwise. Henrietta has volunteered at The Beehive for a number of years, and loves interacting with the people we support, and the attention they receive whether it is through conversation or drawing never fails to put smiles on everyone’s faces.
