Join us to celebrate the cultural treasures of our Pico Neighborhood! We open up our campus to our neighbors, and will launch Culture Mapping 90404, our community-sourced website of Pico neighborhood cultural treasures with an exhibition, celebration, music, food trucks, and open artist studios.

Laboratory of Embodied Intelligences: Dialogue with the Public

Artists, scientists and microbes swapping skills across bodies

What can we learn from our highly successful microbial planet-mates, and can movement help us do that? Featuring Moh El-Naggar, the USC Robert D. Beyer Early Career Chair in Natural Sciences, working at the forefront of bacterial communication; Fathi Karouia, Senior Research Scientist at NASA, working with microbial behaviors on the space station, in our guts and elsewhere; Christina M. Ford, MD, whose practice focuses on Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness; Anuradha Vikram, Artist Director of 18th Street Arts, a writer, curator, educator, whose research focus is transnational futurism; LEI Founder and Artistic Director, Nina Waisman; and LEI Movement Expert Flora Wiegmann.

Art-Making Workshop

1-4 PM

Main Gallery

In this family-friendly workshop, participants will work with artist Sherin Guirguis to create sculptural forms out of earthen elements, and discuss materiality, activism, culture, and displacement.

Music by Flaco

2 PM and 3:30 PM

FLACO has been devoted to writing original salsa and Latin music in the studio or on the spot since 2005. Whether on stage or in session, FLACO performs from the heart without question. With band leader Angel Luis Figueroa.

Dance Performances

The Cabeza de Vaca Cultural Dance School will perform traditional Mexican and Aztec dances, and the Community Corps Zumba group will perform a series of rocking dance moves – everyone is welcome to join in!

Move like a Microbe

3-4 PM

Learn about exo-biology while you move your body like a microbe! Join in this participatory, family-friendly workshop with dance-based artist Nina Waisman and her collaborators at the Laboratory for Embodied Intelligence.
