About
Pick 'n' Mix is the seventh annual Bournemouth Gardens contemporary art exhibition showcasing the work of second year BA (Hons) Fine Art students studying at the Arts University College Bournemouth (AUCB). Led by lead artist Victoria Wareham, this year's exhibition is a playful and humorous collaborative interplay of sculpture, video installation and performance. Leading art magazine a-n has described the exhibition as âan anarchic outdoor event' and celebrated the âsterling efforts' of this endeavour in bringing contemporary visual arts to Bournemouth's attention.
As this year's lead artist, AUCB graduate Victoria Wareham will be exhibiting a sound piece titled, âConcerto Incognito' which will be played from the bandstand. A bizarre mixture of vocal intonations, tones and syncopation, the work asks us to challenge historical fact against local mythology.
Apprentice Superheroes Flash Pants, Thunder Thighs and Scarlet Freeze (aka artists Vicky Orrey, Lynsey Nichols and Laura Petty) take an hour off from their world saving duties and have a well-deserved break in Bournemouth Gardens. Performances are daily (12.30pm-1.30pm, Monday to Friday), weather permitting.
Lauren and the Sewing Roisin (artist duo Charlotte Lauren Wood and Natasha Hale) will conduct a live quilt-making piece aiming to highlight the stereotypical assumptions held about gender and craft. It's free to join in, suitable for all ages, families welcome and fully accessible. For performance times see www.ArtBournemouth.co.uk
To experience the eclectic works of art for yourself, visit Bournemouth's Lower Gardens from Saturday 1 May to Monday 10 May between 10am 5pm. Pick up a free map from the exhibition information point, to read about and find all of the thirteen works of art which will be dotted through out the gardens. The art works are in a variety of media, including performance art some of which will be timetabled, please check the website (ArtBournemouth.co.uk) for details.
The opening night is Friday 30 April from 6pm to 9pm, when all the artists involved, including the performance artists, will be in Bournemouth's Lower Gardens.
The annual exhibition is a collaborative project that has been developed in partnership between the Arts University College at Bournemouth, and Bournemouth Borough Council's Arts Development and Parks and Countryside departments. Pick 'n' Mix marks the seventh collaboration, the project was established in 2003.
