Ania Dabrowska's photography synthesizes Pia's physical existence within the cosmos both physically and metaphorically: Pia is a transsexual whose body and life have undergone transformations based on deep rooted considerations of philosophy and mythologies. Pia is a high voltage force: She is a drummer in a punk band, a performer, a theatre prop builder, and a dancer; she lives in an old-school warehouse studio in Hackney Wick. In this work the attention is focused on a tale of subjectivity, a deconstruction of one's identity in contexts of astronomy, philosophy, and body politics. Ania Dabrowska is an MA graduate of the LCC, University of the Arts London and lives and works in London. She is the recipient of the Welcome Trust People Award (2008) and the NPG Photography Prize (2007).
