Kitch-en Contemporary Urban Art Gallery, Middlesbrough. Is presenting an exhibition of work from Phlegm Comics.
Dan (a.k.a. Phlegm), a 28 year old illustrator/ street artist based in Sheffield produces the self published comic which acts as a constantly updated portfolio of the murals and artwork he's been producing over that time. The comic has a growing print run and is sold all over the UK and even as far as France, America and Japan.
Working predominantly in black Indian ink and a traditional dip pen, the work is a mix of cartoon style and high detail drawings, showing a nightmarish world where beauty and symmetry is balanced with darker more surreal elements.
So far this year Dan has designed t-shirts for the autumn range of Paul Smith clothing, with Monetrome Records to produce an animated music video for the musician Aaron Stout and he's sprayed murals balanced on rusty ladders, and hanging from ropes..... from Sheffield to the isle of man, from night club corridors to shop shutters, derelict factories, caravans, and even a Russian MiG fighter!
Kitch-en will be displaying a range of Dan's limited edition screenprints as well as his latest comic artwork all available to purchase. There will also be limited edition T-shirts designed by Dan for sale. At the special preview visitors can also witness Dan completing a graffiti wall mural in the Kitch-en courtyard.
As part of the exhibition, Kitch-en has been asked Dan to create a unique mural piece on the gallery walls so that visitors can add their own imaginative response as part of the nation wide campaign for drawing at the Gallery's Big Draw event, held 1-3pm on 13th October.
