About

Philippa Hadley Choy is a British sculptor whose art practice explores the medium of sculpure. Working exclusively in plaster, Hadley Choy creates 2D etched drawings and 3D works which cunningly play with the pure idea of sculpture. During her Breathe residency Hadley Choy has been on a series springing from an exploration of Italian Baroque master Bernini whose immense sculptural output is notable for its attention to detail. Choy views his incredible rendering of draping fabric as the pure sculpture of the works and Bernini's primary concern. She explores this in drawings of Bernini drapery etched into coloured slabs of plaster which omit the human figure, noting only the pure sculptural form. Alongside drawings, Hadley Choy has been casting feet - a body part she connects to her cultural heritage - and using the offcuts to create new 3D works. For her open studio exhibition she will present her extensive new collection as a corporal forest through which visitors can navigate a celebration of pure sculpture. Join us for a guided tour through Philippa Hadley Choy's unique art practice over a mince pie and refreshments on Thursday 18 December 5 - 7pm
