About

Ingrid Boucher - Sculptor

The timeless human form and shoreline landscapes are my constant inspirations.

The Resting Heads series is informed by my love of Brancusi’s work. The pieces are cast in a variety of materials including plaster and jesmonite and I often add found organic materials such as shingle and tea-leaves. I try to present an essence of what makes each of us unique and yet connects us all. I hope they kindle reflection, balance and calm.

The Clay, Water, Chalk series is made by casting plaster into the irregular, spontaneous tracks created by working my hands through clay. Their holes both disrupt and connect. I like playing with negative spaces and juxtaposing textures, contrasting smooth surfaces against haphazard shapes; like the smooth interior of an oyster shell and its opposing, encrusted exterior, or sea-worn pebbles and coral spikes. The resulting forms are reminiscent of the chalk rock-pools of the Sussex coast and the crags and caves contained within them are ready to be explored.

I work from Phoenix Art Space, Brighton.

Philip Cundall

I painted at art school in the 1980s and I see these photographs as versions of those paintings I did over 30 years ago! Growing up on an island means I have an enduring love of the sea; its expansiveness and ever-changing detail. However I see it primarily as a vehicle for exploring form, composition and colour, rather than a subject in itself. These photographs are more about the absence of detail. Inevitably some of the images are more representational than others but I’m ok with that. I’m not interested in the picturesque; in sailing boats, sunsets or seagulls (although I do allow the occasional swimmer to splash past).

I see the images as abstract. When thinking about the work I think about artists’ work that I love: Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, James Turrell, Vija Celmins, Richard Misrach, Gerhard Richter, Barnett Newman and, of course, Rothko.

I do the bare minimum to the photographs in post processing and their scale is very important - they need to be big enough to operate as expanses of colour.
