Peter Newman: Circulation

About

Peter Newman's first solo exhibition at PayneShurvell, Circulation, includes works from Newman's on-going Metropoly series and related Skyspace wall sculptures, as well as selected etched aluminium panels from the Schemata series, a moving image video and sculptural elements. The title, Circulation, is both a play on the photographic process employed — whereby a scene is rendered into a circular panorama — but also references other forms of movement and systems — information, dynamics, biology, people, financial & atmospheric. The show develops a long held interest in a human relationship to space and modernity. It also more specifically investigates the notion of the city as a machine and an instrument of communication. The exhibition creates a series of contrasts between the energetic noise present in the largest etched panel - which is completely abstract, yet appears to depict movement of an unknown element - and the formally ordered man-made physical architectural structures. The solid aluminium Skyspace sculptures contrast with the immaterial photographic images, and the fluid timelapse film with static sculptural forms. A new site specific piece - depicting the courtyard outside the gallery — in photography will be also be included.
