About

Peter Doig is an internationally admired British painter who emerged during the early 1990s, when he made his name with his distinctive approach to figurative painting. Using photographic images from newspapers or snapshots as a starting point, Doig recasts such everyday imagery to present the viewer with imaginary, evocative landscapes and figure scenes. All are imbued with a strong sense of atmosphere ' his figures often seem out of time, and his landscapes possessed of a strange, haunting presence. Spanning the last two decades, this major survey brings together over 50 paintings and a substantial group of works on paper. It includes a significant body of work made in the five years since his move to Trinidad in 2002 ' including many pieces which have never previously been shown in the UK. This exhibition offers the most comprehensive overview of the artist's work to date, and allows his recurring themes and shifting vision to be reconsidered in light of his most recent work.
