About
British artist Peter Care has been exhibiting internationally since 1979. During the 1980’s in the UK he was known primarily as a ceramicist working in porcelain. In 1988 an opportunity to move to the Netherlands resulted in a twenty year period of exhibiting mainly in Holland and Germany. It was during this time that Care began working primarily as a painter.
Peter Care still defines his practice as being closer to sculpture than to traditional painting as he uses the material (paint) in a very physical way. Applying thick, wet layers of pigment onto canvas forms the start of his working process; after covering the canvas first – he then begins the painting. Describing his work as “like painting in reverse”, Care proceeds to scrape, smear and remove the pigment from the canvas in various ways and in different directions to ultimately reveal the original construction beneath – albeit now in a transformed state.
