We are putting together a one-off newsletter in light of COVID-19, disseminating works the look at themes in isolation around Sisyphus, absurdity, losing meaning, aimlessness, pointless repetition etc.

THIS IS NOT A PHYSICAL EXHIBITION, BUT AN EMAIL NEWSLETTER

About

Sisyphus, condemned for all eternity to push a boulder up a mountain only to have it roll to the bottom over and over again, fully recognized the futility and pointlessness of his task. But he willingly pushed the boulder up the mountain again every time it rolled down.

Albert Camus sees the myth of Sisyphus as one of hope in absurdity; he believed it showed that existence is meaningless and looking for meaning is futile, but making your own meaning is the key to a happy life. Thus, Sisyphus’ acceptance of his fate made him happy.

In the current situation regarding COVID-19, we are all bound to stay at home, unless we are key workers. This has resulted in a perpetual aimlessness for many, facing a lack of meaning or direction in the confines of this situation, and our very limited environment. We are, in ourselves, grappling for a sense of purpose amongst the chaos, rolling the boulder up the hill and watching it roll down again.

This open call will explore ideas around the absurdity of our current existence, responses to efforts to keep ourselves going, and messages of hope to those who are perpetually searching for meaning at this difficult time.

We are looking for artworks of any media (sent in the form of a photo or video for online distribution; either upload your video and send us a link to it, or send us the video and we can upload it for you) to be put into our newsletter ‘Perpetual Existence’. This newsletter shall be sent out to anyone who signs up, as well as various art contacts of our own. The works don't need to have been made during the isolation period, as long as they concern ideas around absurdity in the philosophical sense of searching for meaning in a universe in which there is none, and/or similar themes around monotony, lack of meaning, etc.

The submission deadline is Monday 4th May, and the newsletter will be sent out on Monday 11th May.

For more information, check out our instagram @perpetual_existence and follow us for updates - we have posted our own works on the topic for inspiration.

Submit your work(s) or interest in recieving the newsletter to perpetualexistence2020@gmail.com
