On the opening evening of When There is No More Music to Write – a two-person exhibition by artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire and avant-garde composer Alvin Curran – Spike Island hosts BEAMS, a live performance by Curran and a group of Bristol-based art and music students.

About

This one-off event is presented as part of Bristol New Music, a major experimental music festival in the city.

Following a series of workshops in the lead up to the show, the ensemble cast will present a structured improvisation: singing, shouting and activating a set of ‘found’ musical instruments, all gathered according to Curran’s extremely broad definition of what an instrument can be. Including pan flutes, shower pipes, clocks, and pieces of wood, this ‘instrumentarium’, as he calls it, invokes a hybrid acoustic landscape that combines music, noise and the sounds of everyday life, and will remain on display throughout the exhibition at Spike Island.
