PAVEMENT #4: Wood Painting - part of HOUSE festival

Wood Painting is an installation by Phil Root created especially for Permanent's window space on 20 Bedford Place. Phil Root's practice explores the illusory plane of the painted surface. His paintings, which incorporate folk-like patterns and primeval imagery such as birds and eggs, become elements within larger installations of domestic objects and surfaces (such as pot plants, rugs, tables). Root employs both representational and diagrammatic methods of depiction, and uses diagrams of natural forms as a map for the placement of objects. Through linking and mixing-up various modes of representation Root creates a dialogue between the space of the installation and the internal space of the paintings, 3d space and the 2d plane, the figurative and the abstract. For this exhibition Root will create a flat surface to support the installation of paintings, ceramics, plants and other objects, dividing the window space horizontally so that the objects and paintings become viewed as part of a vista.
