Despite being born more than a century apart, these two artist-storytellers explore a range of common concerns in their work.
About
Honore Daumier was not afraid to be controversial. Working largely in lithography to create work for journals and publications, his work was uncompromisingly critical of contemporary society. In fact so seditious were several of his caricatures, they earned him a six month prison sentence.
Here Daumier's prints are shown alongside those of contemporary artist Paula Rego. Similarly provactive, her psychologically charged presentations of human dramas are often populated by characters in animal form for satirical effect. As well as drawing out the interesting parallels between their work, the exhibition reveals that illustration continues to be an important means of social commentary.
