About

Stephen Friedman Gallery is delighted to announce its September exhibition: new paintings by British artist Paul McDevitt. Paul McDevitt was born in 1972 in Troon, Scotland. In 2001 he was awarded the Saatchi fellowship upon completion of an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. He now lives and works in Berlin. Working as an artist cum curator, McDevitt frequently collaborates with other artists to produce works of great intentionality without the limits of predetermination. Fantastical visions depart from comic book illustrations, antique etchings, vintage magazines and computer-generated graphic design to reveal apertures of escape from restrictive realities. Such open-ended pursuits, however, belie an artistic practice steeped in art history and material culture. Intricately rendered still lifes of acrylic gouache and ink recall Flemish master Joris van Son's ‘Still Life with Allegory of Human Life' (1658-1660) and the classical foundations of artistic pursuit.
