Herrick Gallery is proud to present the third incarnation of De-In-Stall.
Paul Hazelton and Tom Swift are both based in Margate. Prior to collaborating on De-In-Stall they were coincidentally showing their works back-to-back on adjoining booths at London's Art 14. They decided to turn this around and to work together. 'A Fete Worse Than Death 2014' (co-curated by Alice Herrick) provided the ideal platform for them to subvert each other's practices and to challenge or comment on the roll of the commercial gallery or art fair booth.
Their stall, constructed entirely from curated artworks or parts of artworks, doubles up as a pseudo gallery. By placing this in a real gallery setting it becomes less functional and more subversive, or depending how you look at it, more ordinary. Functional elements from its life during A Fete Worse Than Death become exhibits in the âreal' gallery space. For example, Simon Williams' film will be screened and Steve McPherson's beautifully produced winner and looser tickets will be enlarged and pasted on one of the walls. Hazelton and Swift want De-In-Stall to be seen as more than a one off event they want it to be seen as a collaborative sculpture, installation, performance, self-contained artist-led space and gallery all in one.
