About

Part Seen, Part imagined brings together new and existing work by a number of artists and designers based in Scotland who have all formed their own relationships with Japanese tradition and culture in their practice, taking on board Japanese design-principles based on refined simplicity, asymmetry, an exploration of space and a relationship with nature but also grounding these in present day aesthetics, materials, techniques and technology.

The exhibition takes as its starting point the links to Japanese design present in the architecture of the Studio Pavilion gallery space, borne from its distinct influence on the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and now extended into the work of the artists on display, in their respective prints, ceramics, floristry and sculptural assemblages.

Programmed alongside this show will be an exhibition of new and existing works by featured artist Jenny Smith in the café at House for an Art Lover as well as the exhibition Kimonos: a portrait of a Japanese family an exhibition of kimonos curated by Alison Harley (The Textile Collective) from the personal collection of Yoshino Saito Brown presented within the House for an Art Lover visitor attraction.

This exhibition is an official event of the Japan Season of Culture 2019-20.
