Foco Gallery presents ‘Forever about to end’, a solo show by the artist Carolina Serrano. Curated by Mattia Tosti.

About

Forever about to end is Carolina Serrano’s debut solo exhibition with Foco Gallery. For this occasion, the artist will present a body of recent artworks that inquiry about the possible ways to use time as matter by exploring the theoretical, conceptual and material possibilities of black coloured wax. Trained in sculpture, and occasionally working with different media, Carolina Serrano creates artworks that, united by a dense network of metaphors, carry within an aspiration to transcend chronological time and a “corporeal” vulnerability to it, echoing the mortal condition of humans and our desire of eternity.

Carolina Serrano (Funchal, 1994) lives and works in Cascais. Her artistic practice develops in the field of sculpture and installation art. She made her BA and MA in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon as well as a post-graduation in Art Curatorship at NOVA- FCSH. Through her work the artist explores, among others, the temporal dimension of Sculpture, as well as the duality between interior and exterior and between full and empty space. She is interested in the concept of the restricted, inaccessible and therefore unknown“place”, and also in the uncertainty, the doubt, of the extent of that “place”.She is also interested in the possibility of the materialization of the shadow; and in the transsubstantial possibility of the sculptural object. In recent years she has been working almost exclusively with paraffin wax dyed black because of its plastic possibilities but, above all, by the theoretical and conceptual possibilities that this material can originate in the field of the observer’s imagination. Some of the ehxibitions that she has been apart of are GRÃO Residência artística de Investigação in the Former Captaincy of the Museum of Aveiro (2020); the XV Edition of the Sintra D.Fernando II Painting and Sculpture Award, at MU.SA- Museum of the Arts of Sintra (2020); Estoutro at Mercês Cultural Space (2019);Cascais é a nossa terra at the Santo António da Barra Fort (2019); 5th International Bienal of Art of Espinho, at FACE/ Espinho Museum (2019); I will take the risk, at Tomaz Hipólito Studio, Lisboa (2019); De fio a pavio, de uma ponta à outra, Alcântara, curated and produced by Coletivo Tarimba (2018); Singular Pace at Zet Gallery, Braga (2018); Esta casa já deu luz , Casa Plástica (old EDP building), at A Porta Festival, Leiria (2018), Inside/Outside at Marquês de Pombal Palace, Oeiras (2015); among others.
