ROCKELMANN& is proud to present PAPER/WORK, a curated show by Andy Holtin. PAPER/WORK is an exhibition exploring the use and place of paper in the work of a group of artists with distinctly diverse practices. Eschewing the traditional “works on paper” approach, PAPER/WORK acknowledges that paper is first and foremost a material, one whose accessibility and malleability can render it simultaneously ubiquitous and invisible. The selected works of these artists incorporate paper as substance, as surface, and as an elemental building block of culture, pushing a familiar medium to unfamiliar places.

In the work of Stefanie Bühler (Germany), Maria Bajt (Sweden), and Andy Holtin (USA), paper is a physical material, one that can be coaxed into forms and images that resist our assumptions about the material. These artists find both fluidity and structure in paper as it is manipulated to represent objects and materials beyond its usual state.

For Yasmin Alt (Germany), Danielle Mysliwiec (USA), and Galo Moncayo (Ecuador), paper is used as substrate, though not in a conventional sense. Alt’s collages emerge from the process of painting and finishing her sculptural works, and are as built and seamed as the objects they grow from. Mysliwiec’s constructed surfaces contrast the flexible and vulnerable material they are fixed to, reassessing the concepts of both painting and page. Moncayo’s densely-populated images, though drawings on paper, are generated through algorithms as 3D models, and the compositions captured in the space by virtual camera.

Matthew Kenyon (USA) and Sebastian Biskup (Germany) both look closely at paper as an elemental cultural artifact. Biskup’s layered objects translate but still inhabit the space and language of the fleeting objects and images of advertising, the daily diary of consumer culture. With his project Notepad, Kenyon uses an everyday office product to smuggle the consequences of ill-conceived war back into the offices where those decisions are made.

From object and space to surface and text, PAPER/WORK explores the diversity of artistic possibilities contained in this everyday material and presents a new discourse on the role and presence of a familiar medium. We welcome you to join us for the opening of ‘PAPER/WORK’ on Thursday, December 10, from 7 to 10 pm and on Thursday, January 21, at 7 to 9 pm for the artist talk.
