About

Ronchini Gallery is proud to present our first solo presentation of the Italian painter Paolo Serra. In this new series of works the artist was specifically inspired by Stefano di Giovanni, or il Sasetta, one of the most prominent Sienese Renaissance painters.

In this artist curated, site-specific exhibition, Serra continues his revered monochromatic techniques which explore chromatism and luminosity within a single shade. His paintings explore two dimensional textures, essentialism and surface tensions. His inspirations are as varied as Old Master portrait artists such as Rembrandt and Modern abstractionists such as Mondrian and Malevich. For this exhibition Serra was particularly inspired by the shapes and themes of the works of il Sasetta resulting in a reverential, chapel-like presentation of his works that is also reminiscent of the Rothko Chapel, inciting contemplation and reflection from pure, minimalist elements.

Although this is the artists first solo presentation at the gallery, he has an established and illustrious career and his work has been extensively exhibited in Europe, and is in the permanent collections of: The Arts Council of Great Britain; The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Rembrandt Society; the National Bank of the Netherlands; UBS AG and Museum der Stadt Waiblingen. He has also contributed work to the English Pavilion of the 12th São Paulo Biennial, and had a monograph published by Gi Ori about his practice.

About the artist
Paolo Serra was born in Morciano di Romagna, Italy in 1946, and he lives and works in Clemente, Italy. Serra’s first solo show was in 1962 at the Century Gallery in Northampton. Since then, he has had solo exhibitions in various European cities, including London and Amsterdam. In Paris he participated at the Salon Des Réalités Nouvelles, and in 1973, at the age of 27, he contributed a work entitled Light and Shade to the English Pavilion of the 12th São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. Serra’s works are included in prestigious public and private collections in Italy and abroad: the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; the Arts Council of Great Britain; the Nuffield Foundation, also in Great Britain; the Rembrandt Society in the Netherlands; the National Bank, Amro Bank and Westland Utrecht Bank in the Netherlands; Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna; Museum der Stadt Waiblingen in Waiblingen; National Versicherungen in Basel; Bâloise, Basler Versicherungen, Basel; UBS AG, Basel; Banquiers Dreyfus & Cie, Paris - Basel.
