Out of the Wood

For the last thirty years in his Gloucestershire workshop, Derek Elliott and his team have been making furniture that is both clean and contemporary in its style, yet made with a craftsman's keen eye for detail, symmetry and most importantly — ‘soul' ‘These days I find the emergence of a piece of furniture is at its most rewarding when I feel like a child at play. Wood definitely seems to have a soul,' he says of his work. ‘It certainly engenders warmth, excitement, personal placement with a sentiment akin to love' With furniture not normally to be found in a gallery or fine art context, Derek intends this exhibition to have a unique twist. Each piece will be accompanied by music, especially composed to bring out its personality, purpose and meaning. Additionally, in a collaborative project, Elliott and Co have also been inviting writers to submit work on the theme of ‘Chrysalis' with the winning story to be exhibited as part of a writer's desk.
