Out of the Cosmic Storm : Lindsey Bull

About

Out of the Cosmic Storm, the first solo show by Lindsey Bull, refers to how occult practices, myth and magic have been used in ancient and contemporary traditions to make sense of the universe and our place in it. Strange, cosmological rites performed throughout history demonstrate humankind's long fascination with formulating a way of understanding our relationship with the solar system. These two connected elements, mysticism and the planets, provide the fundamental central point of Bull's investigations resulting in super natural narratives that we can only guess at. Intriguing hooded beings join together, literally with brushy marks, to perform mysterious rituals. Contemplating inexplicable truths, beyond human reason, an obscure and sketchy, isolated individual stares out at us, demanding answers. Bull's paintings blur and reveal. Cosmic patterns and shapes combine with curious figures to suggest an ambiguous place of fractured reality; familiar and secret, like watching a ceremonial performance from the sidelines. Lindsey Bull was born in 1979 and in 2009 graduated with MA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art. Her recent exhibitions include: 'Heavens to Murgatroyd!', Arts Gallery, University of the Arts, London, 2011; 'Fade Away', Transition Gallery, London, 2010 and Gallery North, Newcastle, 2011; ‘I Am Solitary I Am Army', Surface Gallery, Nottingham, 2010; ‘Magic Carpet', The Crypt Gallery, London, 2009. Bull was a prize winner at the MotorCade/Flashparade National Open in 2011 and will have a solo show at the Bristol Gallery in 2012. Other awards include the Red Mansion Prize which included a residency in Beijing, 2010, and the Brenda Landon Pye Prize, 2009.
