Otto Willberg is a composer and improviser with an open attitude towards the possibilities of what music can and should be. He regularly performs with the likes of Pascal Nichols, THF Drenching and David Birchall amongst others.
To coincide with the Launch Pad exhibition; DANCEHALL 11, Psykick Dancehall have invited Otto and collaborators to respond to the exhibition, his own version of a letter to the editors of DANCEHALL 11.
Katherine Macbride – ‘love/torture 2015 (after Ulrike Müller)’
Katherine Macbride will present a text-video performance that picks at the tangled threads of material co-existence. Taking as her starting point the ‘I, we and youse’ of a global constellation of silicone beads, acidic effluents, run off from agri-chemicals, baby wipes and the illegally dumped toxic waste hidden under super injunctions, she skirts the edges of the complex materiality of capital flows. It’s a messy business.
Stuart Arnot – ‘contingency against a-contingency’
If improvisation happens in a cycle of listening and response, then what are the promises and problems of solo improvisation? Playing on the tension between control and contingency in improvisation, Stuart’s performance sets up an ersatz dialogue with his collective selves and prods at the possibilities of improvising solo. Stuart can usually be heard playing in the bricolage-sound poetry-free jazz duo, Acrid Lactations, and he runs the Total Vermin tape label.
