'Perhaps, I'm afraid of losing 'Asia' all at once, if I speak of it. Or perhaps speaking of other cities, I have already lost it, little by little.' Calvino I. (1972) We too are talking about this city as we may borrow it from Calvino, but through these imagined scenarios, we are all exhausting the city we would most like to speak about. We found ourselves talking about these bizarre, mysterious, invisible cities that nobody has ever seen. And yet, we could not avoid the feeling that by talking about these imaginary places, we are describing in bits the place we all really think of. Asia, being not a geographical landmark or a continent in this particular instance, is seen more as a place, the other, a eutopos, memory, or even a longing… but in a way as Calvino puts it '…you could wander through it in thought, become lost, stop and enjoy the cool air, or run off.' Other Asias is a major new initiative that brings together international artists, and artists of the Asian Diaspora based in London. It will comprise of a series of exhibitions, film screenings, performance events, talks, theoretical productions/publications, reading circles and global networking. Other Asias is an open assemblage of cultural practitioners that seeks to build new alliances and cartographies, in light of the mediocrity of the first Asian Arts Triennial held in Manchester 2008, the corporate/ NGO strategies of organisations like Asia House and the current superficial commercial booms of Eastern economies. Other Asias is a networking organisation that aims to provide up-coming creatives a platform for global dialogue that responds to the current issues in contemporary Asia by engaging in various events taking place each month in the UK and Asia. Every current brings with it a new team of visiting artists, allowing a unique exchange amongst the art activists. Other Asias is founded by: Hamja Ahsan - Artist, writer and curator based in London. www.HamjaAhsan.com Sunara Begum - Visual artist and filmmaker based in London. www.SunaraBegum.com Rob Dewan-Syed - Visual artist and art consultant based in London/ Dhaka. www.Dewan-SyedBros.com Fatima Hussain - Visual artist and theatre practitioner based in London/ Lahore. www.Fatima-Hussain.net
