Orbit Rosse

“Orbite Rosse” (Red Orbits, 2009) is a video projection created for the Venice Biennale. The video consists of two broad ovals, celestial and terrestrial maps, colored planispheres and cosmograms, dancing in unison. “Orbit Rosse” shows the celestial world that extends outside our earthly sphere and the terrestrial world within our earthly boundaries. In the video, the explosive and gradual processes appear to be shared by both worlds and these two processes nonetheless seem to exist in antithesis to each other.

Grazia Toderi choses to project video, as this medium is conceptually linked to light. In her projections, the light that travels appears only when it encounters a surface; these projections can also be transmitted simultaneously throughout the world.

Light also makes our existence possible, arriving from the stars, a mysterious energy with which we play and live. Looking at the light, we can draw luminous geometries in the sky, the constellations, around which man has built cities, establishing a continuous relationship between sky and earth.  Projections of light penetrate our consciousness through the two mysterious “red orbits” of our eyes, which direct the images of our head-world.
