Paintings by Julian Wakelin & playpaint
About
This collaborative exhibition has developed out of a mutual interest and recognition of shared concerns, despite the work demonstrating obvious and prominent differences in process and outcomes.
Paintings by both artists are presented in pairs so as to invite comparisons where visual similarities exist - for instance in structure, division of the picture plane, geometry, layering, the use or absence of colour, or design - whilst occupying different aesthetic registers. Making comparisons of scale (physical or pictorial), materials, resolution, complimentary correlation and discord.
A central difference between each artist’s work is their approach to process.
Wakelin’s paintings originate out of a practice that is reliant on drawing and gesture. Incorporated within his paintings the marks and forms that make up the work are both deliberate and improvisational.
playpaint’s works are engineered and largely resolved ahead of production. Development in the work arises from edition, including the contrivance of errors, rather than gesture or haptic intervention.
