Open Studios weekend

About

You are invited to our 2019 Open Studios weekend.

Thames-Side Studios is the largest single-site studio provider in the UK. With over 500 studios we are home to an impressive array of artists, makers and designers and this is a unique opportunity to meet them, talk about what they do, and to buy directly from their studios. 

Practices include painting, drawing, fashion design, carpentry, jewellery, millinery, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and installation, tailoring, leather work, picture framing, stained glass making, writing, upholstery, illustration, textiles, condervation and restoration, lutherie, graphic design, furniture design, film and video, skin care, architecture, wood working, laser cutting, clock making, product design, book binding, and much more…

Events will include workshops, children’s activities, circus arts, demonstrations and exhibitions during the weekend.

Take part in CREATIVE LUCKY DIP!, a project entirely run by studio holders, containing at least one original object or artwork.

SATURDAY 15
Live Mural Painting by Rosie Woods
Trinity Wharf Garden Square
Saturday, 1-5pm. Free
Watch Rosie Woods (5-320) complete a large-scale live mural painting in our garden square. Rosie is a visual and street artist from London whose bold and colourful work treads the line between abstraction and realism. Rosie has scaled buildings across Europe, Indonesia, Australia and America painting her signature style. @itsrosiewoods

Screen Printing Workshop with Adam Hogarth
Thames-Side Studios Lounge, Unit 0, second floor
Saturday, 1-5pm. Free
Drop-in and learn to pull a two-colour screen print with Thames-Side Print Studios tutor Adam Hogarth. 30-minute slots available between 1- 5pm. Free to all and no previous experience necessary. Also on display, a printmaking exhibition by Thames-Side Print Studio members and studio holders.

Press and Stress-Free Printmaking with Sisetta Zappone
Education Space, Unit 2, first floor
Saturday, 12.30-2.30pm, Collagraph, and Saturday, 3-5pm, Monoprint. Free
Printmaking workshop for all ages using a mix of materials and water-based inks. These workshops are great for beginners and those experienced alike, or just anyone creative wanting to have a go with printmaking techniques. It's a fun and inspiring hands-on course that support participants to experience a range of unconventional processes. Everyone will create their plates and prints using unusual medias. Materials included and you can take your print home. Both workshops are facilitated by an artist printmaker.

Create an Augmented Reality Self Portrait with Olga Suchanova and Kelise Franclemont

Saturday, 12-4pm. Free
Olga and Kelise will help you to create fun Augmented Reality 3D portraits of yourself. Suitable for all ages.

SUNDAY 15
Press and Stress-Free Printmaking with Sisetta Zappone

Solargraphy Workshop with Olga Suchanova

Sunday, 1-3pm. Free
Create a simple pinhole camera using just a can. Participate in Chasing the Sun, a project where pinhole cameras will be left to develop across the site for a period of three months. Families welcome, age 5+, children should be accompanied.

Jewellery Workshop with Cordelia Stewart
Education Space, Unit 2, first floor
Sunday, 2-4pm. £4/materials
This fun hands-on workshop will introduce you to basic jewellery-making. Learn how to use pliers and tools with an assortment of beads. You’ll produce a funky necklace, bracelet and earrings. Families welcome, age 5+. Children 12+ can be unaccompanied. Drop-in sessions.

Modern Finance Curators’ Talk, Sunday 16 June, 3pm

Rubbish Robot Workshop with Jacqueline Gunn

Sunday, 3-5pm. Free
A selection of discarded objects and items, once useful, now disused, dismantled and discarded. Destined for the rubbish bin, but now have a chance to become reused, recycled and reinvented. Ray Richardson: Our Side of the Water

Screening of Ray Richardson: Our Side of the Water, a film by Nina Degraeve in association with Les A.P.A.C.H ASBL in collaboration with H.E.L.B-Cinema, filmed in locations around London, including Thames-Side Studios, in 2017. Giant Squid Film Screenings with Daya Dodds

Screening of three short films directed by Daya Dodds. World War II drama The Solider With No Name, thriller When Swallows Fly Low and arthouse film Vita. Gilding on Glass and Other Surfaces with Estitxu Garcia

If you fancy taking to the air with flying trapeze, testing your balance on the tight-wire, learning the art of juggling, being wrapped in graceful silks or swirling with the Cyr wheel, at AirCraft Circus Academy there are endless possibilities and everyone is welcome. Sculpting the City with London Sculpture Workshop

Create your own Cyanotype Prints with The Gate Darkroom

Saturday and Sunday, 12-6pm. £2/materials
Be creative and have fun making cyanotype prints, one of the earliest forms of photographic processes dating back to 1842 when the first ever book with photographic illustrations used cyanotypes. Create unique handmade images, watch them emerge before your eyes, and take your prints home. Easy to learn and quick to produce (you’ll be getting your first prints in 30 minutes). Creative Lucky Dip Box
Assorted Studios
Saturday and Sunday, 12-6pm. £10
Guaranteed one original artwork or object in each box. An initiative by Richard Proctor (5-224) and available from participating studios across site. All proceeds from sold boxes go to charity.

Refreshments
Head to The Arts Café or Harrington Way for some food and refreshments.
You can choose from a wide range of homestyle cooked food and a variety of delicious snacks, handmade cakes and Ethiopian cuisine. Vegetarian and vegan options will be available. You can also enjoy a refreshing craft beer, cider or G&T from of our friends at Off-The-Wagon.
