About

Open Studio is a special occasion for the audience to see the creative process of residing creators and to hear their talks and discussion with guest speakers.

On 11/16 (Sat), five creators will give talks on their artworks and activities during the residency. In addition, there will be a special talk “Poisons of the World and the Mission of Artists in a Mildened Society” by our guest Kato Yukiko (Associate Professor, Saitama University) on 11/17 (Sun).

Relatively speaking, the world has become more peaceful than 50 years ago. In Japan -- one of the developed countries in the world – the number of crimes has declined, few people die of starvation, and human rights of women and sexual minorities are more recognized than before. However, on the unseen side of society, various “poisons” are rampant such as hate speech, flaming on the Internet, suicides, mental illness, etc. Why can’t we become happy in this super-convenient society? What is the role of “poisons” of the World? This talk answers these questions by analyzing art and social phenomena, and clarifies the role of contemporary artists.

On 11/16 (Sat) and 11/17 (Sun), we will also have Gallery Tours, which TOKAS staff will introduce residing creators’ activities and researches at each exhibition space in Japanese.

Facility Tour / Information Display:

- Visitors will have an opportunity to see the rooms and common spaces where creators stay and communicate with each other.

- We provide information on our partner institutions of exchange residency programs and answer any inquiries from visitors.
