About

OPEN SITE is a Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) open call program which began in 2016 and aims to build a platform that brings together projects focused on artistic expression across all genres. This year marked the fourth annual call for proposals, and a total of 202 applications were received. Following a strict selection process, successful candidates included four projects in the Exhibition category, three projects in the Performance category, and two projects in the OPEN SITE dot category. Additional projects in the TOKAS Recommendation Program and the Educational Program bring the total of projects being launched to 12. All of the successful candidates exhibited a strong will and sense of freedom, along with an overflowing desire to share their projects with the world. We hope you look forward to seeing the projects come to fruition.

Artists:

1.YOF (OHARA Takayoshi, FURUSAWA Ryu, YANAGAWA Tomoyuki) “2D Painting”

The “2D” in the title refers to two types of “Depth.” Viewers are first mesmerized by what seems to be a two-dimensional colored image on a flat screen, but upon closer inspection they realize that the rectangle which appeared to be a screen is in fact a cut-out window through which objects in three-dimensional space can be seen, and it is the contrast between the two that produces the image. The three-dimensional depth of the real world is combined with an illustrated sense of depth produced by two-dimensional colors, offering viewers an opportunity to experience the intersection of the two.

2. UNNO Rintaro “Counterattack by Land / Curious Obsession”

Adopting first-person perspective game footage as a theme, the artist presents installations consisting of collections of video footage shot in multiple locations using cameras installed on his own body to achieve the desired perspective. Shooting footage of the world as if it were a game distorts the scenery, which seems to give the spaces an appropriate 3D-game feel, but beyond the distinct, unifying purpose shared by the footage of scenery and people, it also gradually begins to reveal the complexity and multi-layered nature hidden within the world. A “curious obsession” incites a “counterattack by land.”

The performance crosses multiple boundaries, including musical and stage performance. In a Post-Performance and Workshop that follow, audience could experience the content of the performance more deeply.

4. Physical Theater Company GERO “Dance and talk? or Talk and dance?”

Words become movement and movement becomes words. Words are deduced from the movements of a flapping mouth and begin to walk by themselves or perhaps latch onto a lover and find happiness. Communication between humans is dismantled into tiny fragments, which are then reconstructed using living bodies, voice, and video.
