Lake presents Akshay Bhoan’s show “One Tongue Over Another”. This new body of work examines memory, language and resilience through a combination of photography, mixed media and installation. Bhoan’s work explores how learning new concepts often means forgetting older ones, crafting stories that map our collective journey and highlight the influences on language and identity.
By weaving together images and text, Bhoan portrays language as a dynamic map, rich with the voices of its speakers. His installation at Lake considers sound through our multi-channel spatial sound system to engage viewers on multiple sensory levels, guiding them to experience the physicality and narratives embedded within the works.
Akshay Bhoan graduated from Slade School Of Fine Art in 2023. He is recipient of the En Foco Photography Fellowship (2020) and a Blue Room participant with Aveek Sen (2021). His work has recently been exhibited at, La Biennale di Venezia, Croatian Pavilion, Venice (2024), The Studio@620, Florida (2022), Worldling Gallery, London, (2022), Poplar Union Digital Arts Festival, London, (2020) and ICP Mana, New York (2017)

Lake is a dedicated space for the development of collaborative audio-spatial practices.
Through installation, performance and conversations, artists are invited to use the gallery’s native 7.1 spatial sound system. Lake encourages the extension of artistic practices through this site-specific engagement.
Much like the ecological landscape of a lake, supporting life both around and beneath its surface, the gallery seeks to develop collaborative processes beyond individual mediums. The participation of the public forms an integral part of this immersive ecosystem.
Lake is based in Deptford, London and is run by Nishant Shukla.
