Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Jan Kalab is a Czech artist known for his abstract works with organic shapes. First present and active in the streets where he sprayed his large and angular lettering, he has gradually transformed and enriched his visual language.

About

According to Jan Kalab, circle is “the most complex shape”. In playing with form, he uses a diverse palette of colours, with one usually occupying most of the canvas’ surface. Sometimes he adds what he calls an “imperfection” to the circle. The role of this imperfection is to emphasize that the circle represents two opposites – sphere and hole. Existence vs void. The imperfection brings movement to the perfect shape of the circle. Movement is life.

As he explains, “I started to focus on the interactions of the elements, the intersections, rather than the letters themselves. For me, it was the gateway to the language of abstraction. "
