About
On Colour: A Solo Exhibition by Samuel Harriman
2nd – 9th December
Opening Night: Friday 1st December, 6-9pm
Surface Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of light and colour by Samuel Harriman. On Colour comprises a display of paintings and light installations based on ideas of colour, shape and light.
On Colour is a celebration of light. As Aesthetica Magazine remarks, Harriman's practice “combines the mediums of light installation and painting to intonate the point that the use of light is a form of painting”. The use of painterly processes, the light as a form of paint, and canvas as a material, ties the mediums together. Drawing on colour theory and the way we perceive colour, Harriman's work extends beyond the walls both physically and ethereally. Different shades of light infuse the space, from symbolic reds indicating matter and gravity, to connotative yellow representing thought, and generate a sense of relaxation and smooth movement. This journey will culminate in a light sculpture colour wheel, while the viewer is embraced by a distortion of natural light.
Samuel Harriman is a British artist based in Leicester. Since graduating from Leeds College of Art in 2013, he was longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize in 2014 and has exhibited across the UK and the Netherlands.
On Colour opens in the Project Space in conjunction with our annual Volunteer Show in the Main Gallery. As always on the Opening Night, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
Artist Talk: Thursday 7th December 2pm
Samuel Harriman will be conducting an artist’s talk in relation to his practice and solo exhibition at Surface Gallery.
The talk will begin by a discussion regarding Harriman’s background, his work and what has influenced it, and his involvement in previous exhibitions and projects. It will then develop with references to the exhibition specifically, discussing what inspired the work being shown. Here, Harriman will focus on the development of colour theory, in particular the work of theorists and scientists such as Johannes Itten, Johann Goethe and Isaac Newton, and how this influenced painters and light installation artists in the 20th Century and now.
Harriman also adds that if participants would be interested, he will also discuss on a personal level his experience as a (fairly) recent graduate and about finding internships and exhibition opportunities.
This is an ideal opportunity for undergraduates, practicing artists, and for the inquisitive to gain an insight into his work and colour theory.
