About

A performance by artist Gernot Wieland followed by a conversation with art historian Martina Mazzotta

In collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum and Belmacz London.

Austrian-born, Berlin based artist Gernot Wieland analyses the potential role of art in psychiatric contexts through his new lecture-performance based on the research he led during his residency at Cripta747 in Turin last autumn.

Gernot has been interested for many years in psychological conditions, both in human and animal subjects, as well as in the relationship between psychiatry and nature. While in Italy, he discovered that in the Seventies the Psychiatric Hospital of Collegno, near Turin, was planning to present a theatrical piece, performed both by professional actors and patients, based on the film "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. The play was never performed but the story, which will be part of Gernot’s new film - with the role of the characters inverted: humans attacking birds - gave him the possibility to further investigate interspecies power relations.

The event will be introduced by Marco Delogu and moderated by curator Lavinia Filippi.
