About

OK, OK

This exhibition is a site specific work made for an unseen imagined site. Reminiscent of architectural plan drawings and models that describe imagined spaces, this work was conceived in Sydney and installed in Paris.

Every element in the room is derived from text, specifically the word OK. As such, all the work is black on white, like text on a page. Understood and used across many languages, it is a word that crosses boundaries and borders. For an Australian artist looking to engage with a European audience, seeking to be understood, but reliant upon translation, to say OK seemed a fitting way to respond to the invitation to show in this space, at this time.

The word OK is defined by Wikipedia as follows;

OK (spelling variations include okay, O.K., and ok) is an American English word denoting approval, acceptance, agreement, assent, acknowledgment, or a sign of indifference. OK is frequently used as a loanword in other languages. It has been described as the most frequently spoken or written word on the planet.[1] The origins of the word are disputed.

The various elements in this exhibition reflect different expressions of the word. Large in scale but fragile, tiny and insistently repeated, or bold and heavy, there are many ways to interpret what is being said. In the current international climate of nationalism, it must be a good thing to cross borders and say ‘yes’. To approve, accept, agree, give assent, acknowledge, (even if the manner is indifferent) in such a way that everyone can understand. This exhibition, made for a gallery that spans two continents, acknowledges, and hopes that there is still a space for cross cultural understanding and discourse.
