Of Wax, Dyes, and Labour will present new works by 7 contemporary Sginapore-based artists from different artistic practices that respond to the traditional art form, batik. Tutored by artist-curator Fajrina Razak, the 8 artists will translate, juxtapose or amalgate their existing practices with elements found in batik such as its technique, process, materials, motifs or usage of the fabric.
The selected group of artists includes a ceramist, illustraotrs, a wood-based artist, a photo-based artist, a performance artist, and a printmaker. Featuring artists Aklili Zakaria, Almostasthma, AmirahRau, Fajrina Razak, Lee Wan Xiang, Shang Ng, and Yang Jie, the works will be exhibited in pockets of space around the Malay Heritage Centre. There will be talks, a curatorial tour as well as workshops to engage the public.
