New installation and drawings by Sam Clift
About
The exhibition 'Obstacle' demonstrates a culmination of ideas explored by the artist within the past year surrounding the visual perception and physical possibilities of textural materials most commonly found within the home.
Through its provocative location within the gallery, 'rain-dance' 2009 allows the viewer to interact with its structural assemblage. The ritualistic stacks create a strong presence from the offset; oozing paint delicately filtering out of them onto the floor, its destination unclear. Loose segments of paint-soaked carpet, floating in stasis in a position symbolic of that of a tornado, levitate around the stacks.
Whilst the installation is situated within its local environment, the drawings exist within an environment all of there own. The viewer is cast inward, exploring a fictional world through the textural definitions left by the mark making, revealing wild and archaic images of utopian fantasy which exist for a moment, but for a blink of an eye and the narrative evaporates once again back into its formal structure.
