An exhibition of sculpture and constructions by the artist Jacqueline Duncan
About
Inspired by her intimate relationship with the ever-present river Dart lapping against the walls of her studio in Devon, Observe : Obverse explores the play of light on the water’s surface, which, animated by wind, tide and passing traffic creates a constant aquascape between the observer and the observed.
The overlapping forms and images find echoes in a diversity of expression through the juxtaposition of materials in her constructions and reliefs. Wire, acrylic foil, and iridescent paint are interwoven to create delicate open structures and shifting forms. The reflective and repetitive patterns of surface and water are explored through a series of wall reliefs that subtly shine and shimmer as the viewer interacts with the work. These works seem to fuse the influences of earlier works by English constructionist Kenneth Martin, with the kinetic structures of Jesus Rafael Soto within a diagrammatic framework reminiscent of aquatic flow patterns.
