NUESTRO BARRIO connects artistic groups of the independent scenes in Berlin and Mexico City in order to critically reflect on city development, gentrification and the role of corporate and cultural responsibility in these processes.

About

Both in Berlin and in Mexico City the independent scene plays a crucial role in the development of contemporary art. Often it is precisely through the independent scene and its autonomous character that stimulus and experience of new forms of art expression, as well of resistance to economic pressures, arise. Even though there is an established twinned relationship amid the two capitals, the contact between the independent art scenes is still very limited.

Nuestro Barrio Project is supported by the Goethe Institute Mexico and the Program Mexico Alemania, as well by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen IFA (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations). As cultural workers affected by displacement processes we want to deal with the links between economic interests and cultural policy. It is our concern, in the context of the project, to investigate the role of economic companies in the current political and economic crises and conflicts in Latin America, especially of urban development in Mexico City, and to give a platform to critical voices.

The independent non-profit exhibition institution neurotitan leads thus further a 2015 well-tested format; Yes We’re Open. An open gallery that provides a workspace and room for invited artists, collectives and projects, and thus challenges and expands conventional exhibition formats.

The artistic exchange involves exhibitions, workshops, lectures, discussions and collectively developed art interventions that thematically deal with a social and fair urban development and seek artistic answers to the (spatial) displacement of independent cultural and artistic projects. To kick off the project the participating artists invite you to see the exhibition, for discussion, live music and mescal.
