About

Stemming from this vision of Édouard Glissant, Not to be a singular being is an ongoing initiative that examines what it might mean to 'be one and multiple', 'be yourselves and the other' simultaneously.

As a form of resistance to commodified identity politics and the reduction of human beings into static classification, the 1st edition of it brings awareness of our own personal complexity, speculating on and forging entanglements with others. This way the project is dedicated to imagining "difference", and "otherness" anew. It consists of an exhibition, an opening night with four performances,  two related events, and an online platform. By bringing together four artists: Asuf Ishaq, Diana Zrnic, Foxy Azucar, and Katarina Ranković, together we will think through the diasporic body as an archive of intergenerational experiences, newly emerging biopolitical interpersonal entanglements, individual position/authorship in community-based decolonial critique, and the fluidity of personal identity.

We will be having opening night performances on 25th September, from 5:30 - 9 pm. RSVP here

The opening night performances unfold with a reading and discussion of Katarina Ranković's Anomaline, an experimental novel which depicts a protagonist without identity. Subsequently, a live reading performance of her script A Ritual Resuscitation of Eternal Lovers is conducted by two volunteers. Following from this, there is a real-time visual performance of Asuf Ishaq's works Articles of home (2022) and Mother (2020) by the artist himself. Foxy Azucar continually activates the space with a semi-improvised performance also a musical collaboration with Allison Balanc, Armor Amor VII: EspírituCorazón, facilitating conversation through a combination of singing and speaking. The audience is guided through bass guitar vibrations and asked to consider what their visions of a new world via collectivity entail. Montages of ceremonial moments from burning flowers, dancing, and protesting will be superimposed on her reflective performing dress and earthwork relic.
