Northbound | Nordgående is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, drawing and performance with a focus on process and place, and is the work of a group of six artists from Scotland and Norway. It will travel from Ullapool to Norway during 2018 into the new year.

About

Northbound Nordgående is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, drawing and performance with a focus on process and place, and is the work of a group of six artists from Scotland and Norway.

Not all of the artists have a traditional background in ceramics but their creativity is strongly connected by ideas of narrative, lines and traces. Each has developed a practice that explores how the ceramics artform meshes with other disciplines from sculpture to illustration. Together their work creates an exhibition that serves to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary ceramicists.

The exhibition also looks to highlight the influence of place on the artists’ work, exploring in particular the cross-border, cultural connections across northern Europe and the region’s ancient and traditional maritime routes.

Much of the work shown here has been created as a direct result of international exchanges by the artists:  BIOSENARIOspent six weeks in Ullapool in 2017 through a residency awarded by An Talla Solais through the Royal Scottish Academy’s Open Exhibition and Brown travelled to Norway to spend time researching coastal folklore to inform her practice. Andersskog will also undertake a residency in Ullapool during the first week of the exhibition and has been commissioned to create a new work in situ in the An Talla Solais gallery during the residency, using her ideas of the physical line.

Starting here, the exhibition will journey northwards over the next year. The work will travel to Thurso Art Gallery in July and then to Bonhoga Gallery in Shetland in September and its voyage will be completed at Fjell Festning Museum near Bergen in 2019. In each new venue, the exhibition will be reconfigured by different curators, creating four versions of its own narrative.

The exhibition was initiated by An Talla Solais as part of its ongoing curatorial project, which explores how artists and art organisations can best work together in creating an body of work through a collaborative process of conversation, reflection and making. The project, and this exhibition, are made possible through the generous support of Creative Scotland, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Henry Moore Foundation
