About
Rona, Gallery Director and Artist, was based in Tokyo between 1991 - 1994. While there, she made the acquaintance of Nobuo Kusunoki, Illustrator, Doll Maker, Photographer and (Tsubame) Book Shop Founder. They met while exhibiting together at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
Kusunoki's photographic works depict the everyday scenes of Tokyo. His solitary viewpoint utilises a tonal depth, with observations of light and shade. The pieces convey a sensitivity of the viewer, Kusunoki, to the simplicity of everyday life in his location. Select shots are framed by the lens as if each were a positioned Still Life. His delicate attention celebrates the beauty that can be found in the ordinary, and with subtlety, conveys his eye for composition.
Included at ronapainting gallery, are a selection of paintings in oil by Rona, inspired by women in Japan, and that were first exhibited in Ginza, Tokyo, 1993.
Also on view are photographic works by Rie Blake Marsden, a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art. In these, she utilises the photosensitive properties of flora, according to early photographic techniques. In reverence for the Japanese aesthetic value, Wabi Sabi, centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
