About

An exhibition by Sara O'Gorman

22nd February ' 9th March 2013
Preview: 7-10pm Thursday 21st February 2013

Home can be marked as a pause in our daily comings and goings, bounded by our memories and belongings, reinforcing our sense of self and identity. It is also reasonable to consider public space as its opposite: as a sprawling, fluid and indefinite zone. Satis House oscillates between the private and public, functioning as both a gallery and an inhabited domestic space.

Sara O'Gorman's work facilitates the generation of new narratives by (often literally) projecting private familial images into the public sphere. In these installations, a viewer may become the author of someone else's history.

This exhibition draws heavily upon themes developed through previous work, manipulating images through collage to create new spaces and narratives. However, for the first time, the resources used to produce this work at Satis House are of a highly personal nature.

No More Wild Strawberries consists of two projections. The first uses slide projections from the artist's maternal family album, showing exterior images of the surrounding area of the Ormeau Road. The second video projection consists of footage filmed of the interior of a neighbouring house on Deramore Avenue. Together, these projections create a compelling sense of familiarity, where the images are simultaneously known and mysterious, and a sense of déjà  vu blurs with the uncanny.

Sara O'Gorman lives and works in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Recent exhibitions include Nocturama, Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast; After the Future, EVA International ' Biennial of visual art, Limerick; Afterwardsness, Studio Nine, Wexford and bold articles, Queen Street Studios, Belfast.
